| John Loar (1782-1867) came from Brooke County, West Virginia before it was divided from Virginia. This is the panhandle of West Virginia with Pennsylvania on one side and Ohio on the other. He migrated into Ohio and lived there as a married man and had several children in Ohio. Later he moved to Indiana. Finally in the late 1820s or early 1830s, he came down river to Louisiana. He settled in Plaquemines Parish, purchased land and also took out a Federal land grant to land which is located on territory which is the Bohemia Wildlife sanctuary today and was located across from Port Sulphur approximately. Its location is Sect 18 of T 18 S Range 15E. He became a rice planter and in the 1850 census is listed as owning property worth $5,000.00. He was married twice and had children from both marriages. He went blind during the last years of his life and died in 1867. He was born either in Pennsylvania or West Virginia shortly after the American Revolution. He moved into Ohio in the early settler days and into Indiana when it was still a raw frontier. Finally, around the end of 1820, he came down river to Louisiana, probably attracted by the opening of federal land for sale after all the claims left over from the Spanish period had been settled in Louisiana. He died a few years after the Civil War had ended and quite a number of his children had died or returned to Indiana. He had traveled from the upper reaches of the Ohio River to the mouth of the Mississippi River - he was a true pioneer.
